Bill, I appreciate the candor, but you need to realize that you are the exception rather than the rule.
From reading your other articles, it sounds like you started a long career at Industrial Light and Magic, in 1982.
I’m assuming you had a relatively high salary given your work on Star Wars, which, combined with much lower relative costs of housing in the Bay area at the time, and the situation was ripe to own a home.
(Yes, I realize that inflation was an absolute bitch in 1982.)
With the rise of technology companies in Silicon Valley, housing there and in the surrounding areas had nowhere to go but up…in your location.
So congrats, you made it work. But remember, the Bay is not the US.
I mentioned at the end of my article that there are many people who should own a home. But there are many more who should not.
