Damn, I did use “fair share”, didn’t I? I’ll need to amend that.

What I should have written is that the rich do pay the largest percent of taxes compared to income, proving the progressive nature of our income tax laws. What it doesn’t prove is whether it’s fair or not.

I would argue that that it is not fair.

Keep on the fairness track, for capital gains, it isn’t so much that they’re taxed at lower rates (which is its own issue) but rather most people don’t make enough money to even invest. This massively shifts the benefits to the rich, which also isn’t fair.

Please don’t take this story as defending the rich. I’m not, but I won’t vilify them, either. Everyone loves to focus on Buffett, Bezos, Zuckerberg, and a few select others, but they are outliers. Don’t forget that someone earning $500,000 is in the same top 1% as those others, to whom $500,000 is their hourly rate.
