I completely agree with you. Taxes are such a labyrinthine topic, and people don’t realize just how much they eat out of your paycheck.

In recent years, I’ve been a proponent of a higher, flat sales tax to replace the income tax. If you earn $10/hour, you get paid $10 for that hour of work. But the sales tax might be 30% instead of 7%.

But you would have complete control.
