In absolute value, manufacturing has increased (at least in dollar value).

In relative value, manufacturing has decreased over the years.

So yes, manufacturing has increased, but not enough to keep up with the increase in domestic demand. We will never completely move away from the interconnected and interdependent world you describe, and that's not what I'm advocating.

However, the increased dependence on imports, oftentimes from otherwise hostile trading partners, has put the US in a perilous position. There is much less inventory to withstand the type of supply shocks we are experiencing, and that would should expect more of.

Also, while there is some benefit to outsourcing manufacturing by funding other governments' programs for environmental protection, don't for one second be fooled that it is in any way a priority for the parent companies. Their primary goal is to make a profit. Any environmental benefit is secondary, at best.
