Tim, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts.

1. We plan on keeping the cars for awhile. The Outback is already scheduled to be our daughter’s college car when she is a freshman in 10 years. That being said, there are many good points about buying new. Check out this article (not mine) about why buying new is better than buying used.
2. I absolutely agree that renting vs buying is more about the money. I wrote a much longer explanation in this article.
